IF your running Windows 2k or Windows XP and are getting the 1601 error message, BE SURE that the Windows Installer Service is RUNNING. I found that mine was set to manual instead of automatic. Started the service and ran the install and it worked. To check, goto Start --> Settings --> Control Panel, Click on Administrative tools, then find and click on Services.. Then look for Windows Installer, which will be way down the list as it's in Alphabetical Order. Make sure the service is running, if not, RIGHT click on it and choose Start, you might also want to change it to start Automatically to avoid problems like this in the future. Please note that I did do the msiexec /unregister and msiexec /regserver thing before finding this.
