You could have tried Internet Explorer repair first, this is useful for anyone who has that problem, and doesn't use system restore and has no restore points.
It looks like something had changed a file in your system/a registry key and hence your problems.
You can start chat2.0 only in Internet Explorer it would seem, it needs Java to work, as it's DHTML based, and a browser fully able to implement DHTML.
Why messenger doesn't appear is weird, i never looked how they do it, maybe they use an IE feature to detect if you have it, but you could have just started it from the start menu etc...
