If this problem started to occur a short while ago it might be a temporarily server side issue. If that is the case the best thing you can do is wait and see if gets fixed with time. If you don't want to wait you can try the following things:
If you have a firewall try turning it off and see if the problem reappears.
Also check if a proxy server is enabled in both MSN Messenger and Internet Explorer. If this is the case remove them and your problem might be solved.
To do this first open MSN Messenger and click Tools, then Options... and go to the Connection tab. If the options "I use a proxy server" is enabled, uncheck it. To check Internet Explorer, run it, go to Options, then Internet Options... go to the Connection tab. Now select your connection and click settings to see if a proxy is enabled.
If you are using a router to connect to the internet. Does MSN Messenger work flawless on the other computers? Have you tried to connect the computer having problems directly to the internet?
If your problem is not solved after this, can you answer the following questions aside of the ones detn8r provided:
- Does this problem start in the middle of a conversation or after you have been away from your computer for a while?
- What version of Windows do you have installed, what type of firewall do you have and how are you connected to the internet?
- Do you have a up-to-date anti-virus program and anti spy/adware programs installed?
