You don't necessarily have to close the IM box get a sound, you just have to have it as inactive. Say you have two different IM boxes open, when you are chatting in one and the other person IM's you, you WILL here a sound, but while you are chatting with the person and they IM you and the icon is still in that IM box, then you will NOT hear a sound for them. Well that's how it works with me, hope that helps a bit.
