If your working just turn your sounds off.
You can disable sounds by going to Messenger on the buddy list window.
Go to Preferences and highlight Alerts & Sounds.
Untick Enable Alert Sounds
Make sure Showing a message at bottom right of my screen is ticked ON.
Press APPLY then OK.
You should now see the alerts but not hear any sounds so you can carry on working without distraction.
