There was a row over the Gmail trademark in Germany too, this was in the earlier days of Gmail.
Whether it is 'gmail' or 'googlemail' after the @ does'nt make any difference. You can send an email to a person having 'abc@gmail.com' as 'abc@googlemail.com' it would still end up in the same mailbox :-).
If suppose you just need to change one parameter in the URL while signing up for your signing up domain to be 'googlemail' instead of 'gmail'. If I remember the parameter value has to be changed from '1' to '2' or the other way to make it work.
