While I haven't gone near version 8 yet, I would be concerned that some remnants of the beta 8 would take over things on the finished 8 and you would still have problems with it. I don't know for sure.
But did want to say that you shouldn't lose any of your contacts. From what I understand, they are on the yahoo side and not on your computer.
