Complete agree, David. A lot of the mobile IM clients currently require you to sign in, and sometimes through a web browser. If you switch to another app or navigate away, you're no longer signed in and cannot send or receive IMs.

Ideally, it should work more like SMS, where you receive the messages without being "online" or "signed in."
