IM is just a tool, like email, word processing or any other tool. The key to productivity is making your tools work for you, and not the other way around.
I see lots of people who have become slaves to their inbox. They leave it open all day, and let the incoming mail derail whatever they may be currently working on.
IM can help OR hurt. It's all in the application.
Unfortunately, most corporate IT departments consider IM something to be blocked or avoided (other than internally -- and some even question that).
