Freddie, as you suggested, I will try to contact the admin about the firewall but somehow I don't think that's the problem. Let me state why:
Firstly, the person previously using my current computer was a friend. I have never heard her complaing about the same problem. She was using Yahoo msgr too and I saw her recieve messages all the time.
Secondly, if there's some firewall problem, it should be applied to all the computers in the workplace right? But I have seen my neighbours and friends having connected as "No proxies" and yahoo is working perfectly well for them.
Thirdly one of my friends faced the same problem. He formatted his machine and installed yahoo msgr again and was able to connect with "no proxies" and its working out well. Its just my being adamant that I won't format my machine maybe the problem

So, I don't know whether the asking the admin will work out, because it was one of the admin who suggested that I connect with "Firewall with no proxies". So repeat Heeeeeeelp
