I can't tell you how many times I get IMs from strangers asking me "who are you?" It's probably a daily occurance. Why in the world someone would contact someone they don't know and ask them who they are escapes reason. You wouldn't dial random phone numbers and demand to know who answers, would you?
Most of these people probably ran across my screen name from this website, and added me to their buddy list long ago. I usually patiently explain that "I'm the guy who runs BigBlueBall" and do my best to get on with my work. Now imagine how many random IMs a celebrity gets! Not that you could know for certain that they are who they claim to be, but there are a few sites that claim to list celebrity screen names, such as this one. I hope they know enough about AIM to set their privacy settings to ignore anyone not on their own buddy list.

10-05-2005, 07:12 AM At least some of them are genuine -- they come directly from their own website (like Michael Moore).
I am curious though -- have you ever IMed a celebrity? Even with that list, would you try? I bet that most people wouldn't even try, mainly because they respect the privacy of others.

10-14-2005, 03:11 PM I have actually spoken to a name not on that list. Tom Clancy, but not through IM but email, and it wasn't a "Oh I love you" type of email. Strictly business. He was extremely kind and I was shocked he actually took the time to reply. He is addable though to AIM as his address is an AOL account.
And I have heard about someone talking to Rosie O'Donnell (think that's how you spell her name) on IM, she admitted to that on her TV before. She has since learned how to hide herself.

12-30-2007, 07:10 PM Okay. So im sure all of you are aware most of the screen names on here are fake. Well. i break down the mother ****ers. They shouldnt do that, and i stop them. mostly every screen name ive been given has been of fake people, posing as stars. So try to IM me if you find a phony screen name.

06-19-2008, 10:55 PM I think a screen name/ IM handle or email address is very much a public thing.
If somone knocks on your door is he invading your privacy? I think not. Invading privacy would probably be getting access to the account and reading emails or monitoring conversation which is analogous to entering the home and walking around.
