Expanding your AIM profile without the use of link

Now, there's a limit on your AIM profile of 1024 characters (1KB) and that limit is unalterable. However, there is a way to squeeze more out of those 1024 characters than the profile editor will allow you to do.

First, if you do not have a good understanding of HTML, go learn it now. It will help you with many things other than updating your AIM profile.

Find the file that stores your AIM profile. You can do a search on your machine for "info.htm". Your profile will be the info.htm file in the directory that matches your screen name.

Open the HTML file with notepad. Now you can directly edit the HTML in your profile. <FONT> tags take up a bunch of unnecessary characters, especially if you use one font/size/color throughout your profile. Remove the unnecessary tags, and make sure your have a <FONT> at the beginning, and a </FONT> at the end. Now you can add more text!

You will be allowed to save the file if it is over 1KB (notepad has no restrictions), however, when you sign on and submit the profile to the server (this is done automatically during sign on) your profile will be truncated to 1KB if it is over.

Actually Magistyk, newrisedesign's info contradicts what your FAQ says. The FAQ says that you can edit your profile in Notepad and make it as big as you want. Newrise states that AIM will automatically truncate anything over 1K when you connect to their server.

I haven't tested it myself, but maybe we should confirm this and if necessary, update the FAQ?

isnt there a way to make the file size limit more than 1kb, there should be a way right, i mean if people can figure out a way to take those annoying ads out, they can find some programming code we can get rid of to get rid of that 1024 limit, cuz 'newrise' method works but its nto that much... so if someone finds a way, hit me up, cuz i wanna know

Ha... I did this when I was 12... It's a good idea, but I ran into the same problem myself. Maybe if you set up your own propriety MyAIM servers, with your propriety MyAIM...

As for the inter-services aspect of this, developing... I thought about your program that you code, you just find out if their using regular old crappy AIM, then if they are, you add a small message to the 1024b mark saying "This profile truncated by AIM." or something... Something...

phatbass54 you are not right in this. Since AIM sends the profile to the AOL servers, then it is far harder to get around it than getting rid of the ads. The buddy list window is stored in a file called AimRes.dll, on your computer, not the AOL servers, so you can edit what's on your computer.

Unless AIM gets a bigger profile, or a clever method of tricking the AOL servers is discovered, we will have to link

I am trying to expand my AIM profile but everytime I try to search my computer for that info.htm...I get nothing. I have tried to find it on my own and still no success...can someone help me out? My profile always seems to get smaller and smaller...a lot of my friends have so much in their profiles and I can barely get 3 lines worth of text in there...and forget about links...its just really frustrating

Yeah, I can help you out on that one, if you use windows that is.

Go to your computer, C:/Documents and Settings/Application Data/Aim

You'll then see a folder labled something along the lines of ntrhgazc or some other random junk characters. Open that up and you'll see all the SNs you have stored on your account.

Open the folder for the SN you wish to edit the info to, and then you'll see a file called info.htm.

Right click it and hit edit, then, if you can do HTML, you can edit it.

Anyhow.

Only 1kb? Mine is 2kb and theres no problem with it...

does this info.htm file still exist? i can't find it with my version of aim and wanted to see if a couple of different html tricks might work in my profile. anyone know if there's a different filename now or something like that?
