AOL/AIM problem (system msg)

Does anyone else have this problem when using both aol and aim, everytime i sign on to aol when still on AIM i receive the following message:

AOL System Msg: Your AOL screen name (RandmGrl13) is now signed into AOL(R) Instant Messenger (TM) in 2 locations. Click here for more information.

It pops up not only in the aol screen but then in aim. Ive tried everything i can think of to turn it off, can't block it and when I tried turning to aol help (laugh, laugh) I was told a multitude of answers ranging from you having a virus (i don't) to that's a problem with the new aol, to thats a new feature anyway it's really annoying b/c it slows down my computer waiting for both to pop up. I'm using aol 8.0 plus and the latest AIM beta. Thanks!

Hmm... Well lets review for a second.

You're trying to sign onto AOL 8.0 while logged onto AIM, and you get this error message:

AOL System Msg: Your AOL screen name (RandmGrl13) is now signed into AOL(R) Instant Messenger (TM) in 2 locations. Click here for more information.

Hmm... notice the connection between the error message and what you are doing?! You are only allowed to sign onto your screen name once at the same moment. If you want to switch, log out and then go to the other. I mean, seriously, DUH!

Please do not insult me. I have always been able to log on to AOL and AIM with the same screen name. It's only been recently that I've been receiving this message and I would like to be able to sign on to AOL without having to sign off AIM.

There is nothing wrong with your computer, maybe someone knows a trick, although I doubt it. If not, go back to the older version. There is no point in being on both.

I just signed on to MECCA IM, and happened to receive this message... I'm sorry I don't know of another way to drag in here what I have on my AOL screen...

Why did I receive an IM from AOL System Msg? - You may have received an instant message to notify you that your screen name (___)To turn off your Away Message when it is active, click Away Message. Another window will appear listing: how long you have been away from your computer, how many instant messages you've received while you were away, and the screen name of the person who sent the last IM you received. Click OK to close this window. Any messages you received while you were away will be displayed on your screen. is currently signed into the AOL Instant Messaging Network more than once. Please note that you will only receive these notifications from the screen name AOL System Msg.
AOL has recently changed the way it handles instant messages to make it easier for members who use a combination of desktop and wireless devices to get their instant messages. When you are signed in more than once, you will receive incoming instant messages at all locations. You can control which locations receive messages by <setting your Away Message> (hyperlink).

You will get the AOL system message when you do the following:
  • Sign onto the AOL client and AIM with the same screen name on the same PC
  • Sign onto AOL at home and sign onto AIM from a different location (e.g., work)Sign onto AOL and sign onto a mobile portal (e.g., AIM on cellphone)
  • Sign onto AIM at home and sign on as a guest at another location
When you are signed into multiple locations:
  • Your messages will generally be delivered to all locations not set as Away (or locations that have gone Idle).
  • If all locations have Away Messages set, they will all receive incoming instant messages.
Examples

1) You are logged into AOL on your computer and into AIM via a cell phone. You will receive all incoming instant messages at both locations.
2) You are logged into AOL on your computer and into AIM via a cell phone. When you go to lunch, you set your away message on AOL. Incoming instant messages will go to your cell phone only.
3) You have set up Mobile IM on your cell phone, and you leave AOL running on your PC at home. When you go off to work, your PC at home goes idle. Now all of your Instant Messages are automatically sent to your mobile phone.

You will receive the AOL system message any time there is more than one sign-on of your screen name.

Note

AOL will never ask you for your password via Instant Message.[/quote]Then I clicked on the hyperlink above and got this...

How do I set up an auto response to incoming IMs?

The Away Message feature allows you to set up a brief note to automatically display to anyone who sends you an Instant Message when you are signed on but not at your computer or when you do not wish to be disturbed.

To use the Away Message feature:

1) On the Buddy List window click Away Message.
2) Select one of the four choices listed (I am Away, On the Phone, At Lunch, Be Right Back).

To modify an existing Away Message:

1) If you want to edit one of the existing choices, on the Buddy List window click Away Message, then select Set Up Away Messages.
2) Select the Away Message you'd like to modify, and then click Edit.
3) Type a new title for the message (optional), type your new message, and then click Save.[/b]

To create a new Away Message:

1) On the Buddy List window click Away Message, then select Set Up Away Messages.
2) On the Set Up Away Messages window click New.
3) Type a name for your message and the content of the message, then click Save.

Notes:
  • When your Away Message is active, Your away message is on will appear at the top of the Buddy List window, and any instant messages that are sent to you will be automatically responded to with your personal Away Message. A running tally of the number of IMs you receive while your Away Message is on will also be displayed at the top of your Buddy List window.
  • Your name will appear on your friend's Buddy List window with a yellow notepad icon next to it so that they know you are away from your computer.
  • To turn off your Away Message when it is active, click Away Message. Another window will appear listing: how long you have been away from your computer, how many instant messages you've received while you were away, and the screen name of the person who sent the last IM you received. Click OK to close this window. Any messages you received while you were away will be displayed on your screen.

Hi. I have the same thing with AOL System Msg: and it's really annoying. I use AIM with my Verizon cell phone and I leave it on most of the time because I get some very important messages plus I don't like to waste text messages turning it off. When I come home and go on AOL on my computer to check my e-mail I get the message saying I'm signed in on another location and it's sent to my phone as well and it takes two messages to tell me that. It's really frustrating when I'm trying to keep my costs down and stay connected but AOL makes it so hard. If anyone finds a solution I'll be forever grateful.

My AIM does this a lot.

It will pop up a lot wile I am on the computer saying:

Your AOL screen name (XXXXXX) may be signed on to both AOL and AIM from the same location. If you do not wish to receive double instant message windows or sounds, change the "I am available" setting to "Away" at the top of your AIM buddy list. Your instant messages will now be routed to your AOL session only.

I can press 1 and it says:

Your other AIM sessions have been signed-off. You are now signed-on from 1 location(s).

In a little wile, I never timed it. It will say that again. I can press 1. I am sure not one else is signed on some place else. I even changed my password. I would guess if I made a new account it do the same thing.

I have AIM phone line so I want it to be on.

I looked to see if any one had a bot that could auto make it press 1 when it gets the message that you are signed on some other place. But I can't find one. I found this message board looking for it.

Any one know how to fix this?

-Raymond Day

Wow been a long time. No one knows how to fix?

I am sure this is just a error with AIM. That it says your signed on to same other location!

When it does this the AIM screen refreshes! Then the message pops up that you my be signed on to some other location.

You can make a new screen name something like jui5jmela89mr5m4 Would any one else use that same AIM name?

But in a little time you will get a window saying you are signed on AIM IN SOME OTHER LOCATION!

Why don't they fix this error?

Raymond Day, welcome to BBB! Next time you have a different problem than the original poster, please create a new thread (especially if the original post was years ago)

With regard to your problem, are you in fact signed into AOL and AIM from the same location? What versions of each are you running, and what is your connection to the internet (dialup, DSL, cable)?
