Using a friend's buddy icon

My friend has a buddy icon that I really like. Is there anyway I could find where his icon is saved on my computer and use the icon as my own? Or maybe save his icon as a gif file somehow?

you could do an alt+print screen, paste it into mspaint, crop it down to just the icon, save as whatever.gif, and there's your shiny new icon.

Panickedthumb's way works...an easier way is to have your friend email it to you as an attachment.

Another way to do this is if you use AIM 4.8, it doesn't work with any newer version, and if it is an animated icon, the print screen method wont work.
With AIM 4.8 the Icons are all saved in your resources folder. For Win 95/98/ME default it C:\Windows\Application Data\AIM\<screename>\pictures
for 2000/XP it is C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\AIM\<screename>\pictures
and then all the buddy icons are saved as screenname.id where screenname is the SN on the person using it. You can then Browse for icon and select the id file to use that icon. If you switched back to AIM 4.8 to do this, you can get the icons, they will stay saved as id files in that folder, then you can upgrade AIM again, and select those id files as your icon.

Also, Trillian will save all the buddy icons for you as files in your Trillian user directory, you can select your buddy icon from those if you go an log in with Trillian.

What's that have to do with the topic, besides plugging your forum?

with newer versions... i found that you can take buddy's animated icons

For Win 95/98/ME default it C:\Windows\Application Data\AIM\bartcache\1
[I don't have 95/98/ME but i'll assume this based off sathallrin's post...]
For 2000/XP it is C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\AIM\bartcache\1

in that folder are a bunch of seemingly randomly named files without any proper extension. if you right click and select open with... then you use internet explorer (or any other browser) it'll display an icon. however i have not found any pattern to the file name, so what i've had to do is just go down the WHOLE list of files (which is a lot because it accumulates i think) and open all those files. when i find the one i'm looking for (or one that i like that i was not looking for) i just right click the picture and save as a picture file. this works with animated gifs.

If someone is willing to play around with it and figure out how to find a specific sn's icon without checking all the files (or perhaps make it some easier way) PLEASE post back here so i, and others, would be able to learn
thanks
bwahahahahahahaha

i win

Actually, it's not my forum. And I was making a suggestion as to how she could get an icon "similar" to it if she is unable to find a way to get the same one. But as I was thinking, I found another way....

But anyways, back to the topic, if you can't get any of the other above ways to work, you could push the "Print Screen" button (but you have to do it for each individual frame) and then paste that into a image editing program, such as Paint (standard with all computers - can be accessed by Start >> Programs >> Accessories >> Paint), Adobe Photoshop, or Paint Shop Pro then crop it down to just the icon (50x50 pixels). You would need to save each frame as a separate image. If you use Paint, since it doesn't make animated GIF's, you would need to use a program such as CoffeeCup GIF Animator http://download.com.com/3120-20-0.ht...tor&tg=dl-2001 (it has a free trial) to put the images together!

You can open them with Internet Explorer. Just click "Open With" or "Choose Program" or something like that.
