AOL/AIM screenname suspended?

Years ago I created my screenname when my family had AOL. Then we got rid of the AOL service but kept the AOL mail service for $2.50 a month. However, recently we cancelled that as it's silly to pay for an email address. The problem is that now that the account is cancelled I can no longer use my screenname on AIM because it is "suspended." AOL said that because we registered the names with AOL and not with AIM... the names were suspended. Is there nething I can do to keep my screenname?

You can try to register it under AIM, but I doubt that would work, your best bet would be to make a new screename, sorry to say.
Under the new AOL TOS accounts that are not in use should be made advailable for registration again either after 30 or 90 days (I forget which it would be). But after that time you will hopefully be able to register your account again under AIM.

Yeah; this new 90-day thingy is useful for getting those precious 3-char S/Ns for AIM.

does the new tos apply to suspended screen names? or will these stay suspended?

The reason AOL screen names are becoming suspended is because of AOL's TOS for the AOL Service, as opposed to the AIM Service. This change was made well before the the new AIM TOS. These SNs are suspended until the AOL account they were on is reactivated.
