DeadAIM vs aiMutation vs the NEW messenger:mate!?

Hey-

I'm new to AIM add ins, actually I never knew there were any for AIM (basically because I prefer Yahoo! Messenger over AIM). Currently for Yahoo! Messenger I use YTunnelPro and have really liked it (except for the fact that the webmaster has basically dropped dead from the rest of society these days). Anyways onto my post regarding AIM!

I'm going to assume that DeadAIM, aiMutation and the new messenger:mate are the 3 top add ins for AIM? If I'm wrong correct me on that. I'm trying to get some opinions on the BEST add in for AIM. My friends a few weeks ago told me about DeadAIM, however it doesn't work the most recent version of AIM and I'm not going to downgrade AIM just so I can use it so thats out! I was thinking about aiMutation then today I discovered the new and what seems to be quite popular messenger:mate for either AIM or MSN Messenger.

What I don't understand is WHY is messenger:mate being advertised on aiMutation's site??? Is my correct understanding of this because the creator of aiMutation wanted to move onto something big and better, but that he also wanted to keep aiMutation available for free to people who prefer to use it or what exactly is the deal with that? I'm just a tad bit confused.

If I decide to go with messenger:mate, do I use this WITH the regular AIM client or do I not need the regular AIM client anymore? Do I just use messenger:mate? Does it completely replace the regular AIM client? And I guess the same question could be asked regarding MSN Messenger, although I rarely use that program, it gets on my last freak'n nerve and NOBODY that I know even uses it!

Anyways any good suggestions for a newbie for a all around good AIM add in or replacement would be appreciated, as I really want to use the best one that is available but I would like to hear some of the opinions from users on this site (since it is all about instant messaging)!

I use AIMutation, it is pretty good. It has everything I need, logging, alias, clone, new smilies etc.. they are called addons not addins.

I've used all 3 of them and if you ask me Messenger:Mate is the best out of all of them, and M:M is advertised on AIMutations site because they have nothing against Maurizio.

Why would they? Mauizio was the original programmer behind aimutation. He is quite an artist, however I cannot give him props on the payment for his projects. I understand that programming can be quite difficult, but when something like aimutation (which is free) competes with it, obviously the teenagers with no credit card are going to use which ever has the free download.

The same situation goes for messenger:mate for MSN Messenger. I haven't tried it since it's early stages, but it's very hard to compete against other addons when others are made for free, and have much more advanced features (such as Messenger Plus!).

True it is not free, but because it's not free it's better, M:M is a lot better then AIMutation, and the only thing that AIMutation has on M:M is the fact that its free. But if you remember at thestart AimMutation wasn't free.

messenger mate doesnt log other peoples away messages does it? when iwent to the site i ddint download it because it didnt seem to log away messages but it did log conversations.. so my question is does it actually log away messages from others and that sorta stuff?

if you IM them when they have their away message up, and it auto response, that would be logged,

Yes it logs the auto-responses, away/return, although I don't think it logs Idle but somebody is going to request that i think.

buying addons is retarded. who the hell would pay money for addons for a chat program when you can get it for free.

I vote for middle_man or aimutation. If you go middle_man, I suggest using AIM 5.5.3599 or prior...if you're married to 5.9.xxxx, it works but, you need to do a couple things to get it to function.

middle_man hasn't had a release in a while, but they're very close to it. I haven't tried out beta 3 completely (features disabled until ready for attempted-breakage), but the few I have are absolutely ROCK SOLID. Harry told me something along the lines of "we aren't ****tin' around this time" and boy, was he ever right!

If you aren't feeling middle_man, go for aimutation, but keep a very close eye on middle_man so you're around when beta 3 comes to a theater near you. I used deadaim for a short period (about 2 months) after using AIM+ religiously, until middle_man hit the scene...deadaim was driving me crazy with all its problems, being a veteran AIM plugin.

You can still legally use DeadAIM if you grab version 3.2.1, which was the last free version...some people and websites say "3.2.7 or 3.2.8 I think", but those don't exist no matter how much they try to make you believe it...one person just accidentally named it 3.2.8 and then everyone copied and believes that, so if you land 3.2.1, you ARE using the latest free version. Any 3.2.x version greater than 3.2.1 doesn't exist...install it and go into your AIM directory and right click on deadaim.ocm and you'll see the file version...it's all 3.2.1, but far too many people don't think to do that and blindly believe they're on 3.2.7/3.2.8
