What's the verdict?
Still don't see anything confirming this is legit... I'm not installing until I know for sure!

Sounds great....BUT....I'm not a "TRITON BETA TESTER". I have nothing on my harddrive about Triton. They said "active update", but that doesn't mean that it's referring to the particular active update that we're experiencing. I think I'll uninstall everything having to do with AOL altogether. Spooky article though. AIM is all about spying on their customers. So you may just wanna stick with SKYPE for your pc-to-pc or pc-to-phone calls (skype.com)

I got got one too, it sounds very phishy, I'm going to wait for more intel
I got one those updates too 3-28/29-06 in a small dialog box on my machine. I checked AOL website and found no information or related items on this; not a good sign when even AOL web site/search can't reveal anything.Checked Google=0, Yahoo found this only item in My BigBlueBall and good thing I checked. Dubious to find an unofficial "AOL Press Release blog" here of all places. Usually AOL doesn't ask you to update; they just do it. Anybody out there with the same situation, don't install untill we find out for sure. Keep searching and keep posting.

Active Update Is this from AIM?
I am also looking for the answer to this question. I called AOL tech support and was told that this annoying pop up did not come from AOL. I don't want to install the software without verification. On the other hand I have not been able to get rid of the annoying pop up. It just keeps coming back.
Any suggestions???

I unistalled AIM Triton, searched for all things AIM and AOL- related and deleted everything I found. The popup went away. Yippee! A couple days passed and I thought, "Hey, maybe I should reinstall AIM Triton and see what happens." So I did. The popup guy was back immediately. Now I use Trillian.

Yeah, I tried the total uninstall thing. It went away. Hmmmm, and AOL says it's not from them? F**king LIARS!!!! This is the AOL way. A fine example of their ethics. Yes, my girlfriend decided to have me install the AIM again, and indeed it came back. Of course, I decided to finally and once and for all UNINSTALL it. This example of AOL lying really should not surprise anyone. Besides, this is the same company that is about to allow SPAMMERS to access your email account by paying a fee. Here's a clip: "AOL recently announced what amounts to an "email tax." Under this pay-to-send system, large emailers willing to pay an "email tax" can bypass spam filters and get guaranteed access to people's inboxes—with their messages having a preferential high-priority designation.."
Pretty disgusting huh?
I'd like to challenge that AOL rep to answer that one. Really, there would be no point, because an AOL reflects the practice of their employer, which is DISHONESTY and GREED.

I don't know if this problem is still current for anyone or not, but just wanted to say that I was able to get rid of that AOL Core Services Update pop-up by conducting a hard-drive search for all files with "aolsoftware" in their names (they were all in Program Files/CommonFiles/AOL/1100810015/ee), and deleting them. The pop-up is evidently triggered by the AOL system link in the desktop tray, which is why it activates even when you're not connected to the internet. So if you subscribe to AOL, when you delete the "aolsoftware" files, the AOL link will disappear as well, along with its access to system information. I imagine there's a way to get rid of the pop-up without losing the link altogether, but I was so irritated by the time I got to this point that I took a slash-and-burn approach.

I would install it. Triton does use AOL services for its own updates and functionality (I don't mean any actual AOL programs, I just mean they have software thats supposed to run and integrate all their programs). Installing this would probably provide bux fixes.

Part 2:Forgive me for I have sinned
2nd posting here: Against my own better judgement and my own advice I installed that damn AOL update 4-8-06.First you get about 5 new AOL programs/files, ok,then everything seems to be working fine.Next time I start my pc,my icon for my non-AOL Isp.(internet service provider) in the system tray is gone; never happened before- has the new AOL files so greedy/jealous that they sabotage/eliminate the competion?? I used to have AOL as bundled with most new pc's, but I stopped of course and switched to something else. Now the fun begins, I can't connect to the internet and then everything freezes on my pc. For sh*t. Last resort I pull the pc's plug; yes that one. Restart.Samething happens again-everything freezes,I pull the plug again.Freak AOL. Third try I get back to normal which is that I created a "Restore Point" before I installed that damn AOL update.Result: those 5 new Aol files are gone and that damned AOL update reminder is finally gone, too. Yippie Advice: don't install untill we/you/I have more intel/confirming such updates validity and stability and importantly create a "Restore Point" before installing questionable items. Hope I have been helpful to the rest of you'se still with that damn AOL update on your machine, remember mine is just only one experience; there may be more who have successfully installed- thou there not telling.Keep posting- positive or negative outcomes.4-11-06

I think I figured how to delete it...
I searched the computer for the update number, (mine was 3881.7.19) and it found the EXE file, called c:\DocumentsAndSettings\AllUsers\ApplicationData\A OL\UserProfiles\AllUsers\SUDS\Persistant\5 and I deleted it, and haven't seen that pesky pop-up since. The word 'Persistant' in the file name was fitting. When I e-mailed aol about that core update, I also got back a half-assed response telling me to download it to make aol even better, but the reply wasn't official AOL blue, and the name even sounded suspicious, so I still didn't download, which meant my computer would never put itself into Standby, which was a real pain. Now it seems to be gone, thank god.
