active update-aol core services - software update -Is this from AIM?

Thus why my PC is AOL Free. Triton has had way to many odd things with it, I honestly don't trust it. I don't trust AOL. I really think these updates are safe and all, however, I am spooked by AIM Triton and all the odd things with it. It's just that everything with it has been odd, the install, always running, now these updates with no info regarding them...All too strange. And remember, even though AOL may seem to care, they do, about money.

I tried finding my update number, which was different from LEWie2s and found the same file that he did. I also found another one that was a cache file. I deleted the persistant\5 but not the cache one yet. I hope this will do it and if it doesn't, I will go back and erase the cache one. The file name is C:\Documentsandsettings\allusers\applicationdata\a ol\userprofiles\allusers\SUDS\CACHE. Does anyone know anything about this file?

Hey, I deleted these files and it worked great - but then once I signed onto AIM again, they came back!!!! GRRRRRRRR

Yep, mine came back too. I thought I had them deleted and was all clean again, but AOL is pissing me off with this nag pop-up. I tried finding and deleting again, but now I can't even find that, OR the cache file Gateful Head found. I'm wondering since it says beta, and 'thanks for participating...' could this be that AOL still thinks I'm a beta tester ? ( which I'll never do again, what a PAIN!)

DO NOT INSTALL the AOL Core Services software updates! As the pop-up notifications instructs you to and as stupidly as I did -- thinking I was protecting my daughter who is an avid AIM user as well as her friends. The consequences were major and is a little early to tell at the moment if our computer is stably behaving after having major repairs and a rebuilt!

It started out with just spontaneous restarts, then with the frequent flashes of the blue screens listing a stop-code error message (they were different each time it occurred). There wasn't a set pattern when to expect the restarts and various error messages we would get. Being a non-techie and not having the funds to get it checked and repaired readily, I tried to handle it on my own to try to resolve the problems coming up and tolerated restarts, stop codes and error messages for a few weeks, depending on the help and guidance of Microsoft Online and advices from a few family and friends. Then, the last straw -- would not boot up (blank screen)!

My tech friend had a hell of the time with our computer. Though he couldn't isolate the root cause, he highly suspected that a very serious virus got into our computer having seen too many corrupted files and then the timing of a few failed devices along with it.

I'm the one who allowed it to happen, dag-nab-it! Seeing that "AOL" pop-up notification again after having to reinstall AIM for my daughter, heeding the advice of my tech friend to only download from the software maker/source site, couldn't find an updates section or references to AOL core services on AOL's site (not even in their security central section or FAQs that I'd scanned, and seeing no company name, logo or link in the pop-up notification or view history link made me suspicious. Was about to write to AOL online asking to confirm the authenticity of that software update notification, but thought let me Google this to see what others have wrote about this and saw your post listing the similar experiences to mine. Hopefully, for you, your computer is fine and that you didn't have to go the extent, time and expense that we went through.

Will now "report the problem" to AOL online as a request to handle this misleading notification. Will they handle it and can they resolve it is another issue. I'm not here to rant, but hope to save others from what I put my family, my tech friend and me through.

This whole maddening experience made me realized how very dependent I am now on a computer to retrieve, store and maintain almost all of my information, especially, all my contacts. My contacts and their communications are my most valued information. I'm honestly considering as backup now to also WRITE down my important information on PAPER!

I'm sorry to read you went through similars, but glad you had shared your experience and difficulties. I'm now at peace on the cause as to what brought down our computer. I'm going to forward this to my tech friend who had brought our computer back to health, or should I say, a new life?

So, yeah, I did not use search to find this "persistant" folder talked about... I went the direct route, and explored through my own files... what I found...

"PERSISTENT" has 11 folders in it, each folder having:
1) 1 file "1.1.1"
2) 1 file "1.1.1"
3) 1 file "1.1.1"
4) 26 files "0.0.04, 0.0.08..."
5) 99 files, including the "update" that I got notification for that I almost downloaded, until I found this site... thank you, by the way
6)-11) all have just one file, called "1.1.1"

Now, I am not very computer savy.. but, what is all of this? Can anyone explain?

I'm having the same problem. Joined this blog to see if anything had come of it. I refuse to update using these stupid pop-ups so of course I closed the window and moved on and of course, it came back. They are almost as annoying as the stupid balloons microsoft integrated into their windows update system. Another annoying new feature of XP.
Nothing has changed on my computer since this started so I'm 99% sure the window came from AIM somehow. Obviously there is a 1% chance it loaded as I was googling.
I tried deleting all of the files associated with this "persistent" thing, and I had the same situation, as soon as I logged back into AIM, it came back. So obviously we all have a spy ware situation. I'm keeping an eye on microsofts windows update for a resolution.
Anti-virus and spy ware programs don't pick it up. (at least my two).

I think I'm finally free from that pesky pop-up. It's been a few weeks now, and I haven't seen it since. I also wonder if everyone here is also an AOL Beta tester? As soon as I unsubscribed to beta testing, seems the problem went away. Now if I can remember how I did it... Sorry I was so selfish not to share quicker, but when the problem was solved, I guess I was just so happy to get back to happy computer life, I forgot you all were still hanging. I would like to hear if anyone else is Beta, maybe that's the root of this whole problem, and maybe that's why AOL is so hush-hush, telling us to "just download it and shut-up, damnit!". Here I thought I was so 'special' to be picked for beta, but I'll never do it again. I'd rather wait for the GM issue after all the other sorry suckers get the crap with beta. Boy, for $26 a month, you'd think they'd at least buy us dinner before f-ing us!

I was an AOL beta tester years ago. I have since closed my account with them. My only connection with AOL is Instant messanger. I am unsure how to check whether or not I am a beta tester for AIM. I still can't get used to the new messaging software.
I am SICK of this pop-up. I'm close to deleting all of AIM off my computer and switching back to e-mail.

I do believe this popup started shortly after I started using AIM. I am going to look for an older version saved in my backup software folder and see what happens.
