Pushing an upgrade this way is the definition of stupidity. The fact that no one cares is exemplary of the fact that you are holding a gun to your own head and asking we, your consumers, to act like idiots or you will pull the trigger.

As a twenty five year customer of AOL, my reply: go right ahead~
Haha! Yea, I remember when I was a customer of AOL (well, my mom was) when I was about 7 or 8. It sucked, we had it for like 4 years, and it never got any better. Now I'm 18, using Optimum Online, which isn't bad, but I still see that AOL is continuously pissing off their customers. Supposedly they're allowing companies to pay a fee to bypass the Junk E-Mail Filter and go straight into your Inbox (I *could* be wrong)? Complete bull in my opinion. Trying to impress the wrong customers, heh.

Anyways... seeing as how I posted this solution over ONE YEAR ago, I'm very surprised that people are still having problems with this pop-up trying to pressure you into installing. I guess AOL will never learn, right?

Active Update Folder

Thanks to a bunch of people on here posting their problems with this, I thought I should share where I found the nasty little file that causes this thing to annoy us.

I did find the Persistent folder (I had a whole folder, some people I think just had a file) and deleted it. But here's the path in my computer to the Activeupdate.zip folder I found...pull up a chair...this is LONG.

Local Disk C/Docs&Settings/All Users/Application Data/AOL OCP/AIM/Storage/All Users/toaster/aol.activeupdate/en-US/ActiveUpdate.zip

Where the "toaster" folder was located is also where I found the Persistent folder.

How clever a name is "toaster", huh? - a toaster "pops up", doesn't it? Persistently.

Curses on you AOL.

Disable AIM Automatic Update -- try this:

I noticed while debugging some other issues that anotify.exe is launched just before the upgrade dialog box appears. I figured it cant hurt to try denying execute access to that application in hope that it would prevent the dialog from appearing in the future. Try this out and let me know if it works for you. I am still testing the solution and have not yet been nagged for an upgrade.

Change NTFS file permissions for anotify.exe (c:\program files\aim6\anotify.exe). This can be done by right clicking on the file and selecting properties and then the security tab. Find your Windows user name and click the checkbox to deny read/execute permission.

No adverse affects yet.

so, i registered to this forum ONLY for the simple fact of saying THANK YOU! lol. Thanks dobalu for the fix.

it's been about 3 years since this thread has been started, and i'm resurrecting it because this whole time the fix has been for winXP users. for Vista (and possibly Windows 7) users, it's a tad different.

if AIM was intalled to it's default directory, which it should be anyways, stic.dll will be located in this directory:

C:\Program Files\AIM6\services\softwareUpdate

and, i was also poking around these folders and found the "toaster" folder to find the file "persistent". well, needless to say AOL/AIM has changed the file name from "persistent" to "nag". at least this is the case in vista. and if you're curious where it's at, here it is:

C:\Program Files\AIM6\services\toaster\ver4_3_1_1\content

Thanks for the update, CDsDontBurn! Can anyone else confirm that this solution is still valid in AIM 6?
