Possible new AIM virus?
On sunday afternoon my brother recived a link from one of his friends asking "do you mind if I use this picture as my myspace default" or something of that sort. It took him to a website and told him to download "picture09.pif." As soon as that happened McAfee virus scan detected a virus adn said that it was cleened.
This is the message that it gave us "The file C:/WINDOWS\system32\cjnr4r4zegikm.exe was infected by the HackerDefender.gen trojan and has been deleted to complete the Clean process. So at this point i thought that the virus was gone, and afterwards we did a virus scan 3 times and nothing was detected. But each time we restart our computer we get that same message by McAfee about the virus being cleaned and deleleted. I ran the most recent version of AIMFix, but it cannot detect any viruses in AIM. This virus seems offly familiar to the one that went around in mid July but the symptoms dont seem the same. Also it is (the website)/media/picture09.pif instead of picture21.pif. I have also run spysweeper but it either has not picked up any hints of it being there. I have contacted AIM about this but I have not yet recived a reply. I am thinking of booting my computer in safemode and running the virus scan. What effects would that have? Thanks |

It sounds like a new variant of an older AIM virus. If McAfee is giving you that same message each time you boot your computer, most likely something nasty is booting up too. Check MsConfig (start>run>msconfig>Startup tab) for anything that is suspicious looking. If something is found, you can disable it, if you feel confortable doing so. Booting into Safe Mode is a good idea; scan with everything once you are in. Scanning in Safe Mode is a good idea because only the most important things boot up in it (drivers, etc), as opposed to normal booting, which would boot the virus up too.
I do not think that the folks at AIM will contact you back, sorry.

Virus
Well, the folks at aim havent contacted me back yet.
Im starting to get worried, on my computer the virus is spreading and infecting other files. I know two of my friends have the same thing. For one of them the virus is getting into there Nortan Anti-virus and is shutting down the auto-update and other things like that. I booted my computer in safe mode and ran an up-to-date virus scan and it didn't pic up anything. I still have to run spysweep in safe mode which ill do tomarrow. I have made a back up on all the important contents on my computer. I would really appreaciate it if someone would help me. I really dont want to reinstall windows for the third time on my computer. For the moument, I have been using aim express, and Portable GAIM. |

I don't have an answer to your problem at this time, but I should mention... don't hold your breath waiting to hear from the people at AIM. I'd put money on them never... ever... getting back to you. "AIM Support" is a bit of a joke, really.
Hopefully we can find something to help you out. As I was going down the stair, I met a man who wasn't there. [ twitter ]He wasn't there again today; I wish I wish he'd go away. |

Mmm, yes, I think that virus is especially nasty in the fact that it tries to kill off any firewall and/or anti-virus programs you have running. That makes no sense that the scan didn't pick anything up in Safe Mode. Please download HijackThis and unzip it to a folder that is easily accessible. Run it, and save a logfile. Then place the logfile here. I don't know if I can find anything, but it's worth a shot.

I think this is an excellent starting place for your problem:
http://jayloden.com/aimfix.htm I've been supporting Jay Loden's app for almost as long as it's been around, and it does a fantastic job with AIM viruses.
