AIM logged in two places....but not really

Hello all.

I have been trying to get to the bottom of this for a week or so. Every morning between 3 and 4 am my AIM shows being logged on in two places. AIM is only on one machine, and not on my phone.

I understand that my dsl company might do a reset each day...so I just chatted with them. They said they do not do a reset of my IP address on a daily basis. It only happens when I disconnect myself and reconnect. So....there goes that theory...as I read that a daily reset of IP could cause it to seem that I was logged in twice.

I have changed my pw on AIM three times in three days, and still had the issue this morning. This morning, actually, I got two messages from AOL (in past mornings, only one has been there). Here they are:

3:01:44 AM Your screen name (******) is now signed into AOL(R) Instant Messenger (TM) in 2 locations. To sign off the other location(s), reply to this message with the number 1.
Auto Response from ****** (3:01:45 AM): I am away from my computer right now.
aolsystemmsg signed off at 3:01:45 AM.
3:18:58 AM Your screen name (******) is now signed into AOL(R) Instant Messenger (TM) in 2 locations. To sign off the other location(s), reply to this message with the number 1.
aolsystemmsg signed off at 4:08:17 AM.

Any thoughts or ideas on how to proceed. Two days ago I installed PCTools antivirus, antimalware, and firewall. They have not detected anything awry. But, I know there are some programs which are undetectable. I am sort of at a loss.

We use a dsl connection with a wireless router. My machine is the one the modem is attached to. I have changed the wireless router pw as well.

Thanks for any help you might be able to provide.

K

I haven't heard of this problem before, nor can I replicate it. Your theory is plausible.

Well, since you're pretty well ruled out the possibility of someone actually logging into your account from somewhere else, this is only an issue if it bothers you. I don't have a solution, but you could just ignore the message.

What if it is someone logging on remotely...and they are getting my pw from keylogging software? To my knowledge, no one has had access to my pc to put any keylogging software on it. But, we do have a wireless network, and I have heard of keyloggers coming through files. I guess I am just a bit confused as to how paranoid I should be. If I knew others were getting these "double log in" messages once a day, I would not be so concerned. Anyone else with experience in this? TIA K

I have had this happen to me a few times..but what i have realized with mine it is when I sign into my aol home page, or to aol mail. Since they now have the messenger option built in there it shows it as logged in twice. I am not sure that is what is happening with yours, but it is one of the possibilities.

I have this problem sometimes, it's extremely annoying, I found something on metafilter about it, and it's hopeless news:
