AIM: Cannot Remove/Add Buddies

Hi guys,

Something strange happened to my AIM Screename today. When I logged on, 5 or 6 new buddies were on my buddy list that I had not chatted with nor even knew. I found out that I could not remove these buddies.

I also discovered that when I try to add another buddy from the menu, I get an error message saying that this screename is invalid.

I've tried on AIM versions 6.5, 6.8 and 6.9 beta. None seem to fix this problem. Now all my buddies that I would normally IM are gone, and I cannot retrieve them. I would appreciate any help!

Scan your system for malware. Run Malwarebytes and remove anything it finds.

Let me know if this helps at all.

Well your method was able to remove the buddies, but only temporarily, they're back and I still can't add any new buddies-they come up as "invalid".

Okay well somehow out of nowhere this "Bebo" stuff came in and that was causing the screen names that couldn't be deleted.

I fixed that by deleting the Bebo Account that somehow got associated with my AIM sn.

Now my only problem is that I cannot add any buddies. I get the message:

"Screen Name _____ is invalid and could not be added to your buddy list (IM-0311)

This leaves my account as a brick! Any help would greatly be appreciated!!

AOL is integrating Bebo and apparently it's not going smoothly from what I can find. There are a number of errors that AOL is aware of, but they aren't doing a very good job at communicating to users.

As for the error code, I'm afraid while I can find reference to it in a few posts, I'm not finding any clear cut solution. It could possibly be a server side error, but I can't find any listing of error codes for AIM that would help give an explanation as to why it doesn't like the screen name.

I found that the names must be more than 2 letters, cannot start with a number, and must be comprised of letters numbers and spaces. The limit is 150 buddies (from what I can find. But that's about all I can find with regard to errors on adding buddies. Hopefully someone who uses AIM more frequently may be able to chime in and help out a little.

Thanks for your help. I'm really not sure but could an Operating System re-install help? I'm currently running Windows 7 Build 7068.

Well that's still a beta, but I don't really know anything about it. Let's see if anyone else can give any opinions on that before you take any drastic measures.
