What movie is a "must see?"

Seems like this year has not had a lot of movies that were good enough to tell someone else about. But I saw one this weekend on DVD: Memento.

This dark, suspenseful movie sucked me in right right to the end. And they used a very creative "hook." The movie begins at the end, and progresses backwards through time, following the life of "Lenny." You might wonder how in the world a movie could be suspenseful if you start at the end, but trust me, this one does the job quite well.

Yep, Memento was the kind of movie that makes you say "wow."

Lord of the Rings! Sure it's long (just over three hours), but this movie takes your mind on a journey into the world of Middle Earth.

Even if you've never read the books, you'll enjoy this movie.

Only complaints are the common ones: what happened to Tom Bombadil and why must we wait a whole YEAR to see the next one! <img src=icon_smile_dissapprove.gif border=0 align=middle>

Well, maybe not a "must see", but we enjoyed it.

Gosford park.

Complex and numerous characters. Sometimes you have to listen carefully because of the accents. Murder mystery detective story with a bit of comedy. This is the kind of movie I'll probably need to watch again just to catch everything that's going on.

A good night out. Don't drink too much soda because the movie's kind of long. The theater was packed full. Some people came early and brought their Sunday paper to read while waiting in their seat.

Got a new must-see... Requiem for a Dream. This movie is like a Starbucks double-espresso: dark, strong and disturbing.

It follows the lives of a several New Yorkers whose lives unravel as the spiral into addictions. The music, the cinematography, the acting... all of it was great. But very intense.

It's rated NC-17 and is now out on DVD (rent or buy).

Check out the official web site for a taste of the strangeness. A very innovative use of Flash.

My comments:

Memento
Great movie, love how the suspense goes, letting you know a little at a time, while tricking you through some of it.

Lord of the Rings
Good movie, all I have to say on that.

Gosford park
Havn't seen it so no comments there.

Requiem for a Dream
Darren Aronofsky's (the director) work is amazing, I love his style. Seems like he could make anything look great. If you liked this movie you would like his first, and only other movie Pi (Click here for review). It uses a similer style. I liked Pi more, but other people I know have liked Requiem for a Dream more. But they are both great movies.

Yesterday I saw We Were Soldiers. I don't usually like war movies, but I thought it was really well done, good movie.

Hi there ,

has anyone seen the movie "The Three Musketeers"?It was made in the early 90's and had Kieffer Southerland in it.Now thats entertainment. It was funny yet action packed. It really captured a period of time well.

I also more recently saw "resident Evil"<img src=icon_smile_evil.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_angry.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle>Mixed feelings about this film.Loose plot but is directly taken from the popular video game. The acting is so so and the story is poor. But holy shnikeys Bat Man.I dont get scared by mutch but this film had me closing my eyes in some scenes<img src=icon_smile_dissapprove.gif border=0 align=middle>The visual effects were like none ive ever seen. You know how you can tell its an effect even if its a good one? These creatures looked real imean scary. If you are weak at heart and dont like the site of grusome stuff stay away but if your into horror and special effects its a must see<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I finally saw Gosford Park last weekend. I agree on the depth of the characters... that's what I liked best. A wee bit slow paced for me though. I wish I had waited for the DVD, and then rented it.

And I forgot your advice about the soda. Had to excuse myself during the movie (but wasn't particularly disappointed). The movie plods along so slowly I wasn't worried about missing anything.

Frankly, I'm surprised that this movie was talked up so much. Good acting, great depth of characters, a huge cast, but the movie failed to excite me or stir me.

I just saw BUBBLE BOY on satelite, its hilarious....you have to see it...

now moving on into the "<img src=icon_smile_evil.gif border=0 align=middle>serious <img src=icon_smile_evil.gif border=0 align=middle>" movies aisle...

I rented The Last Castle last week, its pretty good although I'm usualy not into that kind of stuff, it wasn't a typical movie (as in, the good guy wins, the bad guy looses) the ending turns everything around, and you never would have expected it....

also, The Musketeer is a really cool movie..if you're into that kind of lovey-dovey/action stuff...eh it was great. <img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle>
