    Subliminal messages in movies

Has anyone ever seen any subliminal messages in movies? Or even, adverts on commercials, or products?

I have personally never caught any, nor even looked for the matter, but someone mentioned to me that they're there. What's the point of them? Why were the added?

Apparently, in the kids' movies The Lion King the word sex is displayed in the sand, and in the movie The Lady and the Tramp when the dogs are eating the spaghetti, a women in the background is masturbating in the window.

Have you ever caught, or been told about one? This has really sparked my interest, not because I want to go looking for them per se, but as to why they were added to movies children watch. What are your views?

Well, if you manage to catch one, it really isn't very subliminal then. Generally, the only way you can actually see these little messages is to freeze frame through the videos as they usually only appear on a few frames (there is usually about 30 frames/sec). I believe the reason they are there, at least in Disney cartoons, is the result of animators simply being funny. There are so many animators on a film, that its practically impossible to track down who did the naughtiness, making it difficult to prevent. Disney doesn't put them there on purpose, they simply just slip through the cracks, and are usually cleaned up for the next release.

Most of the time subliminal messages are used to get movie audiences to buy snacks...They may turn up the heat in the theater and then on the screen two or three frames of a tall, refreshing drink, all spaced out stratigically, flash on the screen..invisible to the eye..but not to the subconscience. They are imposible to see..we only know if they are really there if someonme tells us. Disney's subliminal messages are a joke, but movie theaters use such tactics to "trick" us into wanting and eventually buying snacks..at least they used to, I believe it is illegal now..not sure. Psycologists use them in human behavior studies as well.

although those messages dont really work... the subconscious doesnt really register those images at all... i'm a psychology minor, and we just went over stuff like that - it's below our level of perception. even if they are somehow picked up, most likely our brains just completely ignore it

there was a company that claimed to have put subliminal messages for snacks and drinks in a movie and that sales of those rose over 50% - it turned out to be a complete hoax

on a side note - "fight club" intentionally put several quick "subliminal messages" in... really its just a few pictures (keep in mind, this movie is "Rated are for disturbing and graphic depiction of violent anti-social behavior, sexuality and language.", i.e. NOT for kids) but they actually call attention to them in the movie, so you're sort of expecting them
As I was going down the stair, I met a man who wasn't there.
He wasn't there again today; I wish I wish he'd go away.

if you like that sort of thing there was a film made about it, it was a bit of a freddy cruger rip off with some guy with glass attached to his fingers running around killing people.
if you look in the "ring" film there are several points when the camera fades to darkness and you see the ring symbol as it goes back to the film we studied subliminal messaging in my film studies class and some does work but nothing very important can just things like making you think your thirsty/hungry.
If I could I would shrink myself,

    remove whatever makes you hurt,

I've also heard that in Aladdin, theres a scene with some people on a balcony and one of the characters whispers "All good teenagers take their clothes off" and in the Little mermaid near the end at the wedding the priest gets an erection when watching the bride and groom walkng towards him. There are some others I've heard about, I don't think I beleive all of them, but sometime I might watch those movies and find out.

I think there's a famous movie called [u] Picnic [/b] that claimed the whole thing with the subliminal messages & food sales. But you'll see things like someone is drinking Pepsi or Coke or a bar has an over abundance of Miller signs hanging there. One movie that makes fun of it is an oldie but goody [u] Wayne's World [/b]. I think it was the first one. As far as the Disney ones, supposedly the clouds in the [u] Lion King[/b] spell "sex" and the castle in the [u] Little Mermaid [/b] is a phallus. Why people do this or look for it...because they can....and it gives them something to talk about (even if the movie isn't that good). People even look for faults in movies, like the collar on the wolf in [u] Dances with Wolves[/b] or the car sound that's supposedly in [u] Lord of the Rings [/b]

    subliminal messaGES

I actually haVE heard and seen all those disney "subliminal messages" i really would not consider them that though... like the person above said there are 30 sets of pictures per second. I've actually heard of an instance back in the day with the excorsist. they put gory pictures from the holocaust & other gross hanging pictures from slavery into the film, with one picture out of the 30 pictures. So subliminally your seeing it, but you don't see it. People went to the hospital after seeing that movie having convulsions. The movie was edited since the release. But that's all i've heard of from subliminal messages.

Upon reading this since it got bumped, I realized that I have seen a "subliminal message", or kind of one. In the Ring (1, not 2) there are a few spots in the movie where a black screen with a white ring in it flashes for a few milliseconds. I didn't catch it at first, my brother had to rewind it and play it frame at a time.

Eh, I don't know if I would call some of those disney things "subliminal messages" per say. They're more like a "where's waldo". But, one interesting thing: I watch my neice sometimes and we watched Aladin once when she was about 2 years old. And during one part she just started stripping for no reason at all. I thought she was being funny, even though she's never done that before, not even as a baby. Funny thing was that it was at that balcony scene. I didn't hear about that until later from a friend, then we listened and what do you know...kind of funny. I thought it sounded more like "girls" instead of "teenagers" but, eh, whatever, it's really rushed.

I think of "subliminal messages" are those little pictures that they were talking about. Right, most movies are shown at 30 frames a second, and even at one little frame you can catch it sometimes. Like the "cigarette burns" they talk about in fight club and such. Those are just one frame long. (Spent way too much time in TV production class and the station) Whether they work or not is a matter of opinion.

But those aren't the only things that can have subliminal messages in them. Audio tracks can. My mother worked for a woman who owned a massage parlor once. During massages they play music, you know, that whole "Ah-ah-ahhhh..." serene feeling going on. Well, there are two audio tracks in everything you hear on TV and cassettes. (Two audios, heheh...learned that in TV production too!). And one track on her tapes was music and such, the other were little things, people saying "Oh, that feels good" and other relaxing mantras, things like that. Who knows if they ever worked or if it was just the massueses, but *shrug* eh.
