Should richer countries pay for a tsunami early warning system for Asia?

Intersting question rasied by the media this week. Would it be a good idea or not? Is it fair? Discuss.

Well, I think richer countries should be paying for a tsunami early warning system for Asia, but by no means be forced to do it. I think Asia should be advertising their need for the system, because I think they are in great need of it. I think it is a good idea, and is fair. (As long as no "rich country" is forced to pay, but open to give donations). It would be a great deed for humanity on other countries parts, including the United States, given that we are considered a "rich country".

also given that we are considered to have a ginormous deficit... yes it would be a noble donation and a good idea, but same as the issue raised in the other big tsunami thread. america is hardly in a position to donate money anywhere, first we have to take care of this deficit we're in at the moment.

i'm not bashing our government, i support our president 100%. i dont want this to turn into another US-bashing thread, but we have our own problems that need to be addressed before we can help out the rest of the world.

at some point though, yes it would be good for asia to have a tsunami warning system, but what good would it do? where are the people gonna go?

the thinking man's only relief is insanity... escape to insanity

Point 1) Can any early alert warning system, realy predict Tsunami? Is it possible to have one? I thought it was impossible to predict earthquakes with fair accuracy and precision.

Point 2) Lets assume that the early warning system is possible but expensive... Then I think the richer countries may come forward and help pay for a tsunami early warning system for Asia. But it doesn't mean that they are forced to. By paying for an early warning system for Asia, they are obviously investing some money, but on a long run, it will be a good decision, because their scientists can monitor the early warning system and can "experiment" it in real life situations and see how accurate it is. And ultimately, who knows if the richer countries won't be hit by any tsunami? and during that time, this Tsunami Early Warning system in which they invested earlier, can come to their own benefits.

I dont step aside. I step UP!
