2005 AFL Grand Final

Hello kiddies.

Now usually I wouldnt do this in a forum with about 1.5 Australian members but im just too happy right now.

This weekend, on saturday, is the 2005 Australian Football League Grand Final. My team, The West Coast Eagles, has made the big grand final for the first time since 1994 (we won it in '92 and '94) and are up against The Sydney Swans.

The Eagles have been going well and in good form recently. With one of their senior players, Chris Judd, getting the 2004 Brownlow Medal (Pretty much the equivilent of the Best and Fairest Award for the all 16 of the teams in the league, decdied by the umpires at each game). The Eagles captain, Ben Cousins got the award this year.

As good as it looks, unfortunetly, to be realistic, The Swans have been playing finals style footy all year and they will probably take it out. Im not going to the Grand Final (It's held in Melbourne every year at the MCG) but I managed to get tickets to the Eagles last two finals games and we only just beat the Swans at home three weeks ago.

However, I shall have be watching the game with my Eagles shirt and scarf at a mates house and hopefull The Eagles can take out the flag.

Well I hope your team wins Qwerty good luck to them and enjoy your time around at your mates house, sounds like fun!!

Rugby season has just started here to, which means me washing muddy sports kits for the next six months... Yep feel sorry for me, if you please :0)

Oh.. just wanted to add Qwerty that a chap who played cricket for us this summer, he lives in Perth and plays Aussie Rules as well. Hubby says it's an excellent game. I have only watched it once and it looked fantastic but we don't have sky now, so sniff cannot watch it.

so okay im kinda confused here. when you said 'football' i thought you meant like american football. but then of course, i thought, 'okay he means soccer.' those pictures, to me, kind of look like rugby. cause we all know that rugby is like american football without pads (or soemthing like that).

It's like a cross between gaelic football and rugby I suppose. Very physical one of the hardest games you can play. According to my husband anyway and he plays rugby.

OK. Explanation is in order. Sorry.

Australian rules football (also known as Aussie rules or Footy) is a game played between two teams of 18 players on cricket ovals, or similar-sized areas. The game is distinguished from other kinds of football by the fast, relatively free movement of the ball (partly due to the absence of an offside rule) and the awarding of a free kick for any clean catch — known as a mark — of a ball which has been kicked more than 15 metres.

And yes, I know people say this all the time about their favoured sport. But this is a very hard game too play. If you look at the guys in the photos, they are pretty slim comapred to more stocky rugby guys. Becuase you have to be really athletic and fit to play because the oval is massive. But these guys get knocks as and tackles as heavy as in rugby.

And those pussy gridion guys dont have anything on AFL with "armour"!

Well Sydney won by 4 points. One of the closest Grandfinals ever. Less that a goal. Oh well, maybe next year.
