PC clean up

What are some good programs {that are free} that I could use to clean up my PC & to get rid of some files that aren't needed anymore? I've downloaded one program & it crashed my computer.

You could try http://www.WebAttack.com (recently changed to http://www.SnapFiles.com) and search for freewares, if you prefer.

Depending on your OS, Windows XP (not verified for other OSes) has an option to clean up your disk built into it. In 'My Computer' you can right click the drive you wish to "clean" and select 'properties'. Under the 'general' tab, select 'Disk Cleanup'. It will then calculate how much you can clean. This is really a basic method that just provides access to things that should be done routinely. To set up a schedule that Windows will use to clean up periodically, see this topic:

I recommend at least taking a look at this. Internet files build up fast and can be a hog if you have not cleaned them recently. I occasionally just use this to see what is taking up what and then take care of each individually.

this is what I run at least once a week:
1. Disk Cleanup (built into Windows)
2. Disk Defragmenter (also built into Windows)
3. Spybot Search and Destroy - just use Google to find it
4. Ad-Aware
5. HiJackThis
6. McAfee Virus Scan

i've also heard of a program like RegCleaner or something along those lines that supposedly cleans up the registry of unneeded entries left over from previous installs/uninstalls

As I was going down the stair, I met a man who wasn't there.
He wasn't there again today; I wish I wish he'd go away.

You know Rustedtight a lot of us use this site to help us with things we don't know.. And the only thing that is SAD is people who don't ask questions but I have to say what is sadder is someone who is an adult and trying to make someone feel low for asking a question.. You are a moderator .. You are someone who was put in charge for their knowledge NOT their mouth or criticizim.. If you can't help people maybe you should RE-THINK your position... and to whoever else is running this site.. Maybe you should look more carefully into the backgrounds of these people .. I've been through 2 posts now where this person has used his mouth more than his brain... I didn't know you put children in charge...

At what age does one stop being considered a child? Many would consider me still a child, and your remark offends me. Power and Authority is granted on maturity and helpfulness, not age.

Don't take this post in that I am condoning RT's comments.
