Just an update, since this post, Open Office.org has upgraded to release 2.2 and also its default file format, ODF as been recognized as ISO 23600 standard.

It's also not nearly as good as Office is. If you do any real work with Office, you need the real thing. OpenOffice is great for your mom or grandmother, but when you actually need to use Access or need to create a PowerPoint presentation, you'll want Office 2003/2007.
