***NOTE***
I found a way to sign up, but you wont be able to use gmail quite yet, the information I am telling you will get you signed up for your account so you can easily login when Gmail is released.

Step 1: Visit www.google.com/accounts/NewAccount and create an account.

Step 2: Check the email for a validation link, click it.

step 3: you have now created an account. when Gmail is released go to https://gmail.google.com/ and login with the name you signed up with.

That doesn't make sense. It asks you to register with your email address as your user name. Gmail needs it's own username to work (ie. I could register as marc@bigblueball.com, but I already know for a fact that "marc" is unavialable as a Gmail username and marc@bigblueball.com@gmail.com just won't work) . My guess is you'll have the same opportunity to sign up with Gmail as everyone else when its released. You will still need to register a new Gmail name at a later point whether you register for a Google account or not.

You cannot log into Gmail using your Google Account username and password.

Gmail is in a limited test period and is only available to a small number of people who are helping test and improve the service before it is made more widely available.

If you have been asked to test Gmail and have not yet created a Gmail account, please click on the link in your invitation email.

If you have been asked to test Gmail and have already created a Gmail account, please try to log in again using your Gmail username and password.

Erm, if you'll notice, this thrread is almost a year old. You still need to get an invitation from someone to get Gmail, but theyr'e so commonplace that you could ask almost anyone for one and they'd be happy to give you one.

The other way you can sign up is if you have a cellular phone. Go here:

and sign up using your cellular phone. Otherwise, you'll have to wait for an invitation from someone.
