security alert, windows update, boot faster

I have windows xp home edition and I have 3 questions

1. Is there a way to disable the pop up window that says you are about to leave a secure location or area?

2. Is there an easy step by step way to save the windows updates so that reformating is easier ?

3. Is there a way to make the computer boot up faster? It takes 3- 5 minutes for my computer to go from completely shut down to things loaded on my desktop.

Before you think it, I only have my CcApp running in the startup program , I have minimal desktop items being loaded and I have defragmented my computer already . Any other suggestions?

Update The answer to #1 is Internet options, advanced, security, and uncheck the box that warns you if changing between secure and non secure mode.

An easier alternative to going through the headache and aggravation of finding the appropriate download location..Would be order the Windows Security Update CD it's free http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu.../cd/order.mspx if that link doesn't work use this one http://www.microsoft.com/ to search for the disk. The thing is it takes 2-4 weeks to receive your're copy. Which of course could feel like an eternity..

I don't run XP ,but the do it yourself method that has worked for me in the past is this.

I might be a bit rusty if so ,sorry about that. Ok let's say for the sake of argument you're on the Windows update page and you want the .exe download for Cumulative Security Update for IE 6 SP-1. In the paragraph that details the patch you'll see <read more> click that .You then see Microsoft Security BulletinMS04004 http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../MS04-004.mspx select the version you need and click download. You should then be redirected to the download location Click This >>http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en so that you can see what I am talking about.

You may or may not be able to download all of your patches in .exe format. That is why it would be worth ordering the disk it may have something on it that you have not been able to find on your own. One last quick note make sure that you also download the Security Bulletin for each patch so that you have this information if and when the time comes and you need it. To download the bulletin while on the page click file, save as and send it to the same location as you did the patch. I have a new folder for each patch ,but that's up to you. Then you just burn them on to a CD the same way as you would anything else

ON the left side on Windows Update, click "Personalize Windows Update", then select "Display the link to the Windows Update Catalog under See Also". Now you can download all the EXEs from the catalog.

Thank you David, with your help I dug deeper and found this :

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=323166#3

Its instructions on exactly what to do . I appreciate your help, you got me started in the right direction.

But I am a little confused about something, when I download the updates there are like only about 40 at the most but when I reformat it needs over 100 . Any idea why?

It probably has to do with Service Packs and such. I'm not really sure enough to give you an answer.

Yeah, I think you are pretty much correct with that one.

When you reformat, you will lose all updates you have ever downloaded for your version of Windows, therefore you will be installing the version of Windows that you have on the CD.

For example: If you reformat and install from the CD, Windows XP Professional, then when you go to Windows Update it will prompt you to install Service Pack 1. However if you install from the CD, Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 1, then when you go to Windows Update, you will not need to download SP 1, you will only need the updates after that.

I think that explains it clearly, if not, sorry. I know what I mean!

There is also a "network" d/l of sp1. Its the full version of it, and rather large. The advantage is that you can d/l and save it/burn it to disk, thus making the reload process a bit quicker. The disadvantage is that its 134mb, and if ya dont have dsl or some kind of high-speed net, or ya dont have a stable dialup connection, forget it. I imagine its 10+ hours to d/l at standard dialup speeds.

I personally use Norton Ghost. I have a restore image on another partition of my hdd (and a set of 3 disks), made after a clean install of windows xp pro., and the install of sp1 from disk. So it takes about 20 minutes to set my puter back to that "restore" point. After about 4 years of reloading, from win98se to 2000 pro and now xp (and about a zillion hours doin it), I thank dog for Ghost! Been doing it for a year now, and I dont have any complaints.

Woof!
