Free Audio Software

Right, the chances of there being anything is slim....I need a program that I can download for free that will allow me to produce a wave file that consists of multiple audio files overlayed....i have loads of news clips that I want to overlay for a music video....I would use film editing software but don't have any on my computer...any suggestions?!

Right off the top of my head, one free audio editor that I've heard about is Audacity. I've never used it so I don't know if its what your looking for. But its free and open-source so you could give it a try.

Audacity

Ooh ooh, I use Audacity all the time to cut swear-words out of music. It allows you to highlight and select certain parts of a audio file and delete, copy, paste it, or repeat it, and there's tons of other cool effects you can add to it (such as pitch, tempo, noise removal...).

What you want to do, Phil, is on the Mixer toolbar at the left of the track, click on the Filename and you will get a drop-down menu. Select "Split Stereo Track" and then paste the audio you would like to mix anywhere in only one of the tracks.

Make sense?
