iPod Problems
Hi,
two days ago I won an iPod from my college and was trying to connect it to my laptop. My Laptop's system configurations are:
Windows XP Sp2 professional
USB Port: 4 USB Root hubs
2 VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller
VIA USB Enhanced Host Controller
The iPod I won is the iPod shuffle with 512 Mb size.
I installed the iPod software that came in the CD along with it in the morning. But whenever I connected the iPod to my USB port, the green light blinked for 4 seconds and then turned off and there was no light. If i angle it or like push it in, then the orange light blinks repeatedly and the Windows Task bar shows as "The USB device is not function. Please reconnect it to try again".
I visited the Apple iPod help websites but they were not much helpful. I called up the Help Desk, and the person there, gave me a full description of what to do. She basicaly asked me to download the new version of iPod updater which I did and after that the iTunes recoqnized the iPod and displayed the iPod icon. I was pretty happy and uploaded about 15 songs.
But in the evening when I tried connecting the iPod again to the USB port, I m facing with the same exact problem. The green light blinks for 4 seconds and then the iPod icon doesnt show up at the iTunes and the orange light blinks non stop and the taskbar shows the same error message.
Any idea, what I should do regarding this? She told me if I have the USB Enhanced Host Controller, then its alrite if I dont have the USB 2.0. So any ideas what I should do regarding it?

Only suggestion is to unplug it. Turn off your computer. Plug it in. Reboot your computer and see if any windows pop up saying it recognized it. If it does, click it.

My guess is that there is not enough power on your rail. Do you have any other USB devices connected? If so then disconnect those and try it without that. If it still doesn't work, you may have to look into a powered USB hub--Although I'd try it with someone's desktop computer first to make sure it really is a power issue.

Arsenal - I have rebooted my computer many times and tried to connect again and it doesnt work still.
David - I dont have any other USB devices connected to my laptop. And when I connect other devices like tv tuner USB 2.0, Web cam, printer, they work perfectly.
Someguy - I dont have USB 2.0 but, I have USB Enhanced Host Controller, which the customer support person said is "fine" for using iPod.
I have no idea what to do with this iPod. For the first time my pathetic college "gifted" me something and its a malfunctioning device. Awesome.

Nope. All my friends have gone back home for the summer break and am alone here. BTW, I called the Apple iPod shuffle support people thrice and in the end two of them reached the conclusion that the iPod is malfunctioning and there is nothing wrong in the computer. So they are gonna change it free of cost. Lets see how it goes.

Here's my suggestion: Don't use a front-mount USB port. I've come to the conclusion that those can be pretty sketchy for ipods, but appear to have zero problems with any other device. Connect to a rear USB port and see how that goes. Also, USB 1.1 works just fine for an ipod, but I'm not sure about 1.0 since it's so old...but I doubt yours is a 1.0 port since it's not old.

Hey friends,
the other iPod was malfunctioned. Dont worry about it. Nothing wrong with my USB port. Even if its not USB 2.0 but it does all the functions. Apple guys exchanged the defaultive iPod with a new one and I am using it for a week now and there hasnt be any problem with this one at all. So everythingz fine. Thanks for the help though.
