the more places that link to the site and the more relevant your site content is to the search query the higher the site will rank. if possible try to get listed on http://dmoz.org/. lots of other sites (like google) mirror (and take information from) the open directory project. if you get listed there you are on a good road. the great part about it is that it's free.
you can also add your url directly to google from here http://google.com/addurl. another way to get your site on search engines is to gain affiliates. find similar sites and get them to link to you while you link back to them. although i guess this would be hard/complicated/inefficient if you run a business type site.

You might also try adding Meta tags to the pages you want optimized for search engines. Here's a quick tutorial I found explaining their functions and the different types you can add to a page.
