Interesting View on the Future of Facebook

When I first joined FB a couple years ago, it was way more popular in Canada than here in the States. The last 6 months have seen an explosion in the number of people here using it - at least the people I know.

Death by boredom - the slow demise of Facebook by Josh Visser of CTV.ca puts an interesting spin on where Facebook has been and where it might be headed.

More popular in Canada than in the U.S.? I had no idea...

Interesting article though, and a plausible outcome for Facebook. Personally, I don't get too excited about Facebook, but then, I don't have friends.

Yeah, but currently facebook gets something like 250 thousand new users signing up every day. And did you know there are now many more users from outside of north america than there are within?

There is still a lot of runway for this plane to cover before it crashes.

And Joe, I'll be your friend.

You don't hear so much about Myspace these days, although I know it's still one of the most popular sites. These sites are relevant to a person for a time. That relevance can diminish or change as the person changes.

The business challenge for Facebook et. al. is to change as well, adapting to remain relevant to a broader group of people. Not everyone cares about gossip and the daily minutiae of everyone else.

In some ways, the issues facing Facebook are similar to the issues facing Twitter (sometimes thought of as the "next" Facebook, and currently on a STEEP growth curve). The video posted on the front section of BBB is hilariously poignant: What is Twitter? A humorous video introduction. | BigBlueBall

I think MySpace is dying a slow death, but Facebook is here to stay, mostly because they usually are able to keep the level of spam down. It's interface is professional- I think how users aren't able to change backgrounds of their profiles. It makes everything less annoying. I really like Twitter, but I'm also afraid that it might go the path of myspace as well, because of the level of spammers is increasing.
