The Nintendo Wii
Gather around the campfire, children. As hopefully you all know, the name "Revolution" for Nintendo's next-generation gaming console is just a code-name.
The new name? Wii. The Nintendo Wii (As in "we"). From Nintendo: Quote:
Source Ok... so they have some good reasons for having this name. But I kind of hope they change it, simply because everyone seems to hate it. "The Nintendo Wee"... like Nintendo has named their console after a bodily function. There is tons of criticism about this, and tons of word play will be going on. No doubt about it. "Hey, I'm going to go play with my wee!" It definetely sounds strange. Super Mario Wii.. Animal Crossing Wii... what do you think? For me, personally, I don't really care. The name of the console is not going to make the games any worse or anything like that. Even if they decided to name it "Peice of Crap", I would still buy it. I'm a Nintendo guy and I always will be. Unfortunately, I don't think the name will help the company shake it's kiddie image. Last edited by AwesomeSauce; 04-27-2006 at 06:21 PM. |

Are they nuts???
Nintendo has already lost most of their third party support. Most adult gamers have lost interest in nintendo because of that already. It would only further alienate the adult gamer if they use that name. I can't imagine giving a console a name so obviously offensive and expect it to thrive. What adult or kid here in north america would openly admit to owning a "wee" never mind playing with their "wee". Can you imagine the "anti gamer" groups out there accepting this? They already think that a "game's contents" are corrupting young minds. Hillary Clinton is going to have a field day with that name. Nintendo may have meant wee to be fun, but most of us here are thinking the other wee. Bad move. *This may very well be "the new coke" of this generation. *For those who don't know: Coca cola changed the formula of their product and marketed it as the "new coke". It was the biggest marketing mistake ever. |

I don't see anything wrong with it. Wii. It's different, it's got your attention, and you're not going to forget it. I've seen the arguments against it, and it's all crybaby crap that may last a couple of weeks and then everyone will have accepted it and moved on. Sure Revolution was a pretty cool name and we've all gotten used to it, but it was a code name. It makes me think of wi-fi more than someone going wee or playing with there wee, but what if I told you it's not pronounced "wee" it is more like "whee!"? Sounds better already eh? It's just a name, and I honestly don't think it's going to warrant any more overreaction than the ubergeeks have already given us. Who cares about the silly name, I want to see the gameplay.
I heard it may likely retail for a measly $199. Now that's the stuff that really matters!

Just be patient, and we'll all get used to it. Just like any other weird name: Google, Napster, TiVo, Virgin Airlines.. we'll get used to it. And please.. wait until you can actually play it. Red Steel looks awesome. |

I don't like the name. Now I just keep thinking of InternetExplorer going Wiiiiiiiii. Anyway I think the logo will look very eyecatchy on the console's box.

I just like the fact that most of the web comics I visit have taken it upon themselves to poke all kinds of fun at the Wii. *purr* I love it.
Penny-Arcade VGCats Snafu Little Gamers Though I was a little disheartened to see that Ctrl+Alt+Del and Press Start to Play dropped the ball and didn't bother with commentary *sigh* So hopeful. |xrmush| |posting guidelines|policy|search|
No, I probably can't help you. But I might be able to make you laugh and forget that you just nuked 16 hours of photoshop work. |

Oh, and for those who don't know anything about Nintendo's next-gen system:
![]() A newer, real photo of the hardware (Though it probably has had some small changes since IGN took the photo): ![]() It's an extremely small console (about the size of two or three DVD cases stacked together) and one of it's most notable features is it's innovative controller which looks like a television remote. You can't tell just by looking at it, but it is motion-sensitive in all directions. So imagine playing a sword-fighting game: You would actually swing around the remote like a sword. It is incredibly small compared to other controllers, but from what I have heard, it is very comfortable and feels quite natural when playing. Wikipedia Article |
