MSN Messenger Upgrade to Block Trillian...NOT!
Jeff Hester
August 20, 2003 CNET reported today that Microsoft is forcing an upgrade that will effectively begin blocking third-party IM products such as Trillian. The good news for Trillian fans? CNET is wrong. The story in question is based on an email sent by Microsoft to people using older versions of MSN Messenger or some third-party IM products (including Trillian). The crux of the issue is security. It’s not about blocking Trillian or any other compatible IM product. The good news is that the Trillian 2.0 beta is already using the same protocol as MSN Messenger 6, and will not be affected. It’s not yet clear whether Trillian .74 and 1.0 will be patched for compatibility with the updated protocol or if an upgrade will be required. Last edited by Jeff; 01-16-2006 at 07:44 PM. |
