Top 10 Downloads of the Past 10 Years

by Jeff Hester
July 8, 2005

CNET's Download.com opened it's doors back in 1996 and just announced the top 10 downloads of the past (almost) 10 years. At the top of the list? The venerable ICQ, with over 255 MILLION downloads. ICQ has an advantage in that it's been around for a long time -- it's been listed on Download.com since 1997 -- but it remains today one of their most popular downloads.

Newcomer Skype comes in at number 8 with nearly 1.3 million downloads. Pretty significant considering that it's still relatively new, and a testament to the power of free, high-quality Internet calls.

Top 10 Downloads
  1. ICQ
  2. Winamp
  3. Napster
  4. Firefox
  5. WinZip
  6. iTunes
  7. AdAware
  8. Skype
  9. RealPlayer
  10. Adobe Acrobat Reader
What have been your favorite downloads of the past decade?

Among my favourite downloads of past are Adobe Acrobot Reader, as I'm a book lover. Then comes to Firefox, which freed me from Java expliots, Adaware yes also is my favourite saving me from browser hijacks, but these browser hijacks are getting far more complicated as Adaware now I think is not able to well handle them. In the last my favourite RealPlayer listening internet radio is a great fun for me...
