MySpaceIM "Soft-Launch"

Posted by Jeff Jeff is offline on 05-09-2006, 08:54 PM

The 800-lb gorilla MySpace today "soft-launched" their new instant messaging program, MySpaceIM. Currently only available for Windows users, MySpaceIM even has it's own tag line: "IM for Friends." Cute.

Yes friends, MySpace introduced yet another proprietary IM client into the fray. Now, in addition to running MSN Messenger (now Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, AIM, ICQ, Google Talk, Skype, et. al., you'll also have to run MySpaceIM -- if you want to stay in touch with your MySpace friends.

It's a risky move on MySpace's part. Launching a new IM, non-compatible network in an already-crowded space is something that very few companies have the cajones to attempt (or is it just arrogance?). I can't help but think that this is a really bad idea.

If you're still interested in checking it out, you can download MySpaceIM here. And if you are already on MySpace, stop by and add yourself to the BigBlueBall.

i think i'll pass on the myspace messenger, thanks. i'm not a fan of myspace to begin with. it's just too messy. Mike Davidson had a few entries on how ugly myspace is and how bad it is to use. i can't imagine an IM from them will be fantastic in any way sufficient to win over many people but the 13 year old kids who are already addicted to myspace because of all the "friends" they can make.

I'll pass.

The world is now one step closer to its doom.

Yes I hate MySpace and I feel this will open doors for even more sexual predators and more idiocy.

Definately. And all I have to say is: Dear God save us all.

Ick. I tried it out (sadly) and it SUCKED. About half of it was just links to MySpace crap, the smiles were worse than AIM's, yes WORSE than AIM's default. And the worst parts? Only MySpace can talk with it and more sexual preditors, they are making this much to easy for them.
