The developers of
Adium, an aquafied instant messenger for Mac OS X based on the open source GAIM project have released a beta version of Adium 1.0. But on the developers blog, they are reminding people that this is a real, honest-to-god beta which will contain bugs, so caveat emptor!
Peter Hosey, a developer on the Adium project for a couple years, writes:
"Please do not post this beta to version tracking sites like MacUpdate or VersionTracker, or news sites like Digg. This is a beta; as such, things may not work properly."
It's almost comical really. Begging people not to post on Digg, I suspect has exactly the opposite effect. A miscalculation on Hosey's part? Hmmm...
Like the GAIM project on which it's based, Adium provides connectivity to AIM, iChat, MSN/WLM, Yahoo!, ICQ, Jabber (Google Talk), Lotus Sametime and more. It supports encryption so the boss can't eavesdrop on your private conversations, and tabbing to keep your chats organized.
This new beta adds some real improvements, including file transfers with AIM, ICQ and .Mac accounts, better integration with iTunes, selective account disabling and faster sign-on.
If you're a Mac user that needs to connect to people on other IM networks, check out Adium.
