SUCCESS! Connecting to talk.google.com server via Trillian
Haven't been able to connect (yet), but as reported on our front page, Google does have a live Jabber server setup at talk.google.com
See the screenshot for the Trillian status window for my attempted Jabber connection. UPDATE: smash's world posted instructions on connecting to the talk.google.server using GAIM or Adium. I took his advice and got it working using the Jabber plug-in for Trillian Pro. I'm now live and online with talk.google.com via Trillian. IM me at jeff.hester@gmail.com Here's what worked: Jabber ID: [myname]@gmail.comI then clicked Change to edit the preferences: Server Host: talk.google.comFor the rest I kept all the default values. Connect, and voila! you're live on talk.google.com -- a day ahead of the release! See the attached screenshots for the details. Last edited by Jeff; 08-23-2005 at 08:42 PM. |

What's up with the "Connection lost to server" messages
1) Didn't you mean "talk.google.com" in your instruction?
![]() and 2) I came across this page while looking for a resolution. I've got the same settings as you, but I got a lot of "Connection lost to server" errors, after which it disconnects. I see the same messages in your status window as well. You can view my attempts here. |

so just to clarify this, this will NOT work with Trillian Basic, correct? From what I can see, you need the Jabber plugin to connect, and Basic doesn't support plugins. I just want to clarify this for those of us who aren't working with Pro... don't be expecting to accomplish this through Trillian without Pro.
As I was going down the stair, I met a man who wasn't there. [ twitter ]He wasn't there again today; I wish I wish he'd go away. |

you can also connect to a jabber chat server through Gaim (which doesn't require a Pro version).
here is a screenshot of a configuration that works. to get to the Accounts screen click on the "Accounts" button (on the main window) >> click the "Add" button. replace Screen Name: with your gmail account name (no @gmail.com Gaim will automatically add that). you do not need to specify a password. Gaim will prompt for that when connecting. Last edited by user91c; 08-23-2005 at 10:08 PM. |

Again, confirmed in iChat with the following settings entered...
Setup Instructions (iChat) 1) Open iChat menu, select "Preferences" 2) Select "Accounts" Tab on toolbar 3) Add new by hitting "+" below account list 4) Select "Jabber Account" in the drop down list 5) Fill in Jabber ID with your Gmail address 6) Fill in your Gmail password 7) Type in "talk.google.com" as the server (without quotes) 8) Add your own Account Description 9) Make sure "Use this account" is selected 10) Click Add 11) A new "Jabber List" window should appear. Change your status to "Available" Post-Configuration Settings Account Info Tab Description: [just a label] Google Talk Jabber ID: address@gmail.com Password: [your gmail password] Server Settings Tab Server: talk.google.com Port: 5223 Connect Using SSL: Yes Allow Self-signed certs: Yes Warn before password is sent insecurely: Yes Location: [default is machine name, not important] --- This should have you up and running with Google Talk on iChat. The default advanced settings worked for me. The only issue is the password appears to be sent insecurely, which iChat will warn you about. edit: pax.americana@gmail.com Last edited by Charles; 08-23-2005 at 10:32 PM. Reason: added gmail |
