Google Desktop v2 - now indexes Trillian, Miranda chats

The new beta of Google Desktop (you can download it here) includes an API that lets developers create plug-ins. In addition to indexing AIM chats, there are now plug-ins for Miranda, Trillian, Gaim and even mIRC.

I've been using version 1 for months, and it's the fastest way to search for stuff on my HD -- 100x faster than Start > Search; faster than searching through emails in Microsoft Outlook; faster than anything else I've used for that matter.

I'm downloading version 2 now...

It's interesting... I worked for a dot-com back in the late '90s that built a similar toolbar. It was extensible and allowed personalization. You could display stock tickers, weather, etc. Sadly, our IPO never happened. Maybe we were ahead of our time.

I saw this the other day, I really like it, but to have everything running consumes a bit of RAM, which doesn't work for me and my Photoshopping and everything I do .

Alright, I downloaded it, and I must say, for someone who's very busy and likes their news and media right to their desktop, then this would be a good tool. Unfortunately, I'm not the sidebar type, so I'll probably close it out for good.

Also, being the geek that I am, I downloaded the SDK (Source Development Kit), and I must say, that looks promising. We can expect some very good plugins from some very good programmers in the near future. For those of you who are curious, I believe it's all in C.

Normally I hate sidebars, but I have to love this. It integrates everything I usually need, and does it well.

• Quick View allows you to see recently accessed web pages, and you can star them so that they permanently stay and act as a favorites list.
• You can view all of your GMail messages
• You can see current news reports (it updates automatically)

With plugins I am able too:
- Monitor my CPU, memory, disk, and network usage;
- Control Itunes;
