Are you guys logged in using the same Gtalk name? That won't work if you are. If not... I don't know, my best guess is that you can't both be doing it at the same time through the same internet connection.

Your dad is using the chat function within Gmail, as opposed to using the Google Talk program. You both have to be using the program for file transfers or voice chatting.

mfenech is right, it sounds like Google Chat is intercepting your message and telling your Google Talk program that he doesn't have file transfer capability. If so, there's an easy way to avoid this. Make sure he closes Gmail before you try the file transfer. That way you'll know it's your Google Talk program talking to his Google Talk program, and Chat isn't getting in the way.

Let us know if that works.

Right-click the Gtalk tray icon and click "About" and see what version he is running. Make sure he is running the same version as you (or newer).

I'm running 1.0.0.104 -- some older versions did not support file transfers.

Really, I'm pretty sure it's only the most recent version that has file transfer.

(Also, right now, file transfer doesn't work with all other Jabber clients, since Google Talk defined their own file transfer system atop of their Jingle streaming library. As other clients implement that system, file transfer will work with other clients.)
