AIM transport or Google Talk only works while Psi is open
I'm an admin for a custom domain in Google Apps for Your Domain. We would like to use Google Talk for all of our chat, including our clients who use AIM. I successfully was able to edit our server's SRV records according to a Google help article linked in another thread here.
I was then able to set up an AIM transfer server in Psi so that the AIM contacts show up in the Google chat contact list. All works well while Psi is running... the AIM contacts appear in our desktop Google Talk clients as well as on our mobile t-mobile G1 clients. When I exit Psi, however, all of the AIM contacts remain in the Google Chat contact list but show as offline (even though they are verified online in an AIM client) and no messages are delivered to them. I have tested this with a few transport servers, and have made sure that I am authorizing the transport. Has anyone run into this before? Is there any way to fix this? Leaving Psi running on a computer is not an ideal solution for us and I'm under the impression that this should work when Psi is closed. Thanks in advance for any insight. These instructions for connecting Google Talk to other IM networks are fun to play around with, but I've found the technique impractical for real use. Online status and connectivity is flakey at best. I ended up going back to using Digsby or Adium to connect to multiple IM networks.
A Google Talk/AIM connection should be a piece of cake. As of December 2007, you can add your AIM account in the Gmail integrated chat service without any technical gymnastics requiring Psi, etc. Theoretically, adding the same capability to Google Talk should be pretty simple, and I don't really understand why Google hasn't done it yet. Keep us posted if you figure something out. |

I've got the exact same problem.
I'm using my own domain. I've setup SRV records.. everything works perfectly until I shut down PSI. I've seen a lot of people ask about this, but I've never seen a solution. Can someone enlighten us as to what isn't jiving? Thanks! -Brett |
