Who has me on their contactlist?
I've been using ICQ since 1997 and a lot of buddies have come and gone. Since I usually keep my backups up to date almost everyone that I ever added is still on my list - but my question is this:
-- Is there any way to find out which users have me added to their contact lists? Cheers, Nisse |

In response to this question, I have written an article for my website here: http://www.icq-4u.com/?pid=help#13 , and I will paste a copy below.
-------------------- [u]How can I find out who has me on their list?[/b] Often, people want to know whose ICQ contact list they're on. In MSN Messenger, this is very simple. In the options, there is a section that will show you a listing of who has you on their list. In ICQ there is no such list. But there is a way to get a rough idea of who has you on their list. This method isn't 100% effective, but you can be made certain of some of the contacts. The idea has to do with how the ICQ client automatically updates certain details about the contacts on your list. For certain details changes, the ICQ client will make the updates without prompting you. An example of this is the phone numbers. Go and add a phone number to your profile. Do it via Main > View / Change My Details > Phone Book. Enter a new number, check Publish To All. Now, all the ICQ clients who have you on their list will get your new phone number automatically. But this is done without anyone being prompted, and your phone number is sent to any client that asks for it without asking you for authorization. That's because by default, the ICQ client is set to automatically give authorization to anyone who asks for your phone number. We want to the make the ICQ client prompt you for authorization and we can do this by making a change in Security and Privacy Permissions. Open Main > Security and Privacy Permissions > Contact Info / Files. Uncheck "Auto Accept" for Phone Numbers, and set the permission to "Everyone." Then hit okay. Now change your phone number again, because the last one was pre-authorized. Now wait a while, and you should receive requests from people asking for your new phone number which you need to give authorization for. This is happening because the other clients are asking for it automatically without the knowledge of the users. You will get requests from anyone who has you on their list, as long as they are online. So you may have to wait several hours to allow people to come online before they can send you requests. This method doesn't work against Trillian/Miranda/et cetera. |
