Considering the date of this post, I guess we are in the 'future' of IM, but I definitely think that IM has a long way to go. I believe that IM will soon become a standard way of communication for every workplace. Enterprise IM programs (such as the one I blog for, Brosix) provides a secure network for employees to communicate with one another and their managers while remaining at their desks. This is clearly the fastest way to communicate (hence the term 'instant') and I think it will gain more and more respect in the workplace.
