I never used to but since I have a perment connection (a kick ass bb) I've been keeping it on as long as I'm around. If I'm away at class or whatever I drop it into Away and if I'm pissed I just turn on invisible.

I am on 24/7. When I don't feel like talking or I am not around to talk the IM's just build up, no away message. As far as the build up of these so called "morons" well... I don't let them build up. What I do is meet smart people and talk to them and try to help who I can avoiding them from adding me or me adding them. Sometimes I kick myself in the ass but it's okay. I just recently had a list too large and didn't want to hurt feelings so, silently, I changed names and sent out a couple emails. Now I have a buddy list of about 6 people and I don't have to worry about avoiding anyone! Some may call me a prick for that but myself think of it as being polite

Same for me. I keep my machine on 24/7 (not a problem with XP) and I use away messages or appear offline on MSN. AIM 5.5 has invisibility so I can use that now. That way I can lurke.
