I can go either way, but I love tabbed windows more. As far as seeing when I get a message from someone, in Trillian a tab turns a different color, or flashes (depending on skin you have) and that's fine with me.
"Put it on my tab" is what I say! Woot! (+1 Cornyness)

Tabbed IM windows with Trillian cause it is possible to group windows based on buddy list group and ctrl+tab switches between tabs (just like in firefox)

Yes! I normally use tabbed IM windows for MSN Messenger. It drives me insane if I don't. There's too many boxes in the toolbar and I find it very annoying if I don't. You can just use one window and click once to get from one person to the other. I love it.
