AOL Instant Messenger is the current king of the IM hill, with more users than any other messenger. It's free to download, even if you don't use AOL for your Internet service. A pretty decent instant messenger for beginners, though I'm not fond of their tendency to overload the interface with advertising.
Aimutation is an add-on for AOL's Instant Messenger software. It includes real time message logging, skinning, buddy notifications, buddy aliasing and much more.
Gaim is a multi-protocol instant messaging (IM) client for Linux, BSD, MacOS X, and Windows. It is compatible with AIM and ICQ (Oscar protocol), MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, IRC, Jabber, Gadu-Gadu, SILC, GroupWise Messenger, and Zephyr networks.
Gaim users can log in to multiple accounts on multiple IM networks simultaneously. This means that you can be chatting with friends on AOL Instant Messenger, talking to a friend on Yahoo Messenger, and sitting in an IRC channel all at the same time.

JAMS is a collection of plugins for AIM Triton written by members of the AIM infrastructure team. They demonstrate some of the capabilities of the AIM Triton Plugin API and offer (hopefully) helpful functionality. It offers many different functions, from logging to displaying what song you're playing and more.
