[REVIEW] Star Trek (and a hilarious report)

I saw the new Star Trek movie yesterday, and it was excellent! A great prequel, filling in the back story on all the familiar characters from the original series. Really good movie, and you don't have to be a "trekkie" or a "trekker" or whatever to enjoy it (I'm neither). You probably don't need to know anything about Star Trek to enjoy it, although if you do, you'll enjoy a few familiar references.

Now for the funny part. I ran across this report on how true Trek fans were responding to the new movie. The title gives you a clue:

I saw it! Great flick. I won't spoil it for everone, but I love the part early in the movie where a young Spock says "Live long and prosper" in a way that comes across more like "F-You." Must've been his human side talking.

Eh, I didn't watch it. A lot of my friends were confused because they never saw Star Trek in their life and they would fell left out when the audience would scream at the sight of a "big" character. They said it had great action, though and it was pretty funny. Maybe I'll watch it when it comes to Blu-Ray.

That's one of those things that has always confused me. I know a few people who have never seen a single Star Trek episode or movie, have never seen a Star Wars movie (any of them), etc. I mean, I get that not everyone is into movies like I am, but... isn't that part of just growing up? Part of the American cultural experience (maybe for other countries too, but I can't speak for anything other than America)?

As for the movie... I thought it was okay. Great action sequences, pretty good writing, but... the plot was a little contrived for my tastes.

Also, does JJ Abrams have some sort of fetish for lens flares? Geez.

Right on! Who hasn't heard of Captain Kirk or Spock or Scotty? It's part of our culture, whether you were into it or not, you had to absorb some of that by osmosis.

Leo Laporte said the same thing on his radio show yesterday, but I honestly didn't notice it at all. Most only effect old people.

Big Shocker. I'm one of those people. I have never seen a single movie from Star Trek, Star Wars, Harry Potter, and even Lord of the Rings. They just have never captured my attention enough to actually watch, so I've never even seen a single episode of Star Trek on television. either Yes, I may be surprised and actually like one of the movies, if not all, but the chances of me sitting through and actually watching one are very small. I know Lord of the Rings doesn't really fit in with the others but I threw it in since it's one of those series that you hear people say, "I can't believe you haven't watched it yet."

Go Figure.

HA! Burrrrrrn... oh wait. That was at me. Hmm. No fair! I'm definitely not "old" - I'm barely into my quarter-life crisis.

Though, I noticed the lens-flare thing a lot more because someone had mentioned it to me before I saw the movie. So maybe that's the reason.

And the plot being contrived... less the story arc/character development part than the premise it was all founded on. I won't say more than that to avoid spoiling anything. Any movie based on that premise gets a little iffy.
