Are you using the handwriting function a lot? if you use this function a bit and don't close the application and then restart on a regular basis, you'll see this problem.
Otherwise you may not be achieving direct connections properly for some reasons. To turn off this functionality, click the Tools menu, then Options, then Security tab and if the "Allow me to connect directly to my contacts when sending messages" is checked, uncheck and click OK.
